Commercial property insurer FM has acquired FortressFire, a wildfire intelligence company that combines machine learning with physics-based modeling to help insurers and property owners better understand and manage wildfire exposure.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
FortressFire will operate as an independent, wholly owned division of FM while retaining its existing brand and leadership. The acquisition combines FortressFire’s technology with FM’s engineering expertise, scientific research capabilities and financial resources.
FortressFire’s platform evaluates wildfire risk at the individual property level, providing customers with detailed insights and recommendations designed to reduce potential losses. Its services include aerial wildfire reports, monitoring, analytics, property inspections and mitigation assessments.
FM Chairman and CEO Malcolm Roberts said the companies share a commitment to using data and location-specific risk mitigation to help customers address wildfire threats. He said FortressFire’s technology adds valuable tools for assessing and reducing property-level wildfire exposure.
FortressFire founder, chairman and CEO Michael Ashker said the company has built its approach around the belief that preventing structures from igniting is critical to managing wildfire risk. He said FM’s investment validates the company’s science-based strategy for improving property resilience and insurability.
The transaction comes as wildfires present an increasing challenge for property owners and insurers in several regions. FortressFire uses fire physics to identify factors that contribute to structure ignition and provides mitigation recommendations that can be monitored over time.
The acquisition gives FM additional technology for evaluating wildfire risk while complementing its longstanding engineering-based approach to property loss prevention.
FortressFire will continue serving customers throughout the insurance and property industries, including insurers, reinsurers, brokers, real estate professionals, lenders and property owners.
By combining FortressFire’s property-specific wildfire intelligence with FM’s research and engineering resources, the companies aim to provide more actionable information for identifying vulnerabilities, improving resilience and reducing wildfire-related property losses.
