SIAA has acquired Canopy Specialty Insurance, a specialty commercial property and casualty managing general agent with operations in the United States and United Kingdom.
The acquisition adds specialized underwriting and product development capabilities to SIAA’s distribution platform and is expected to provide independent agencies with greater access to specialty insurance products and programs.
Canopy focuses on niche commercial risks for small and midsize businesses. Its specialty areas include contractors’ liability, excess casualty and legal indemnity programs, among other coverages. The MGA also brings existing carrier relationships, specialty programs and wholesale distribution capabilities to SIAA.
Matt Masiello, CEO of SIAA, said independent agencies are seeing increased demand for specialty coverage but can face challenges finding solutions for niche risks. He said the Canopy acquisition gives SIAA additional underwriting and product development capabilities to identify opportunities and develop specialty programs for its agency network.
Canopy will continue operating under CEO Justin Tweedie and will maintain its existing underwriting authority, carrier capacity and wholesale relationships.
Tweedie said joining SIAA will provide additional resources and distribution capabilities that can help Canopy expand its existing programs and develop new specialty products while maintaining the carrier and wholesale relationships that support its business.
Canopy becomes part of SIAA’s broader distribution strategy, which also includes its Agent Alliance, retail distribution through Sequel Insurance Agencies and wholesale distribution through Xchange.
SIAA said its initial focus will be on supporting Canopy’s current programs and wholesale relationships. Future expansion could include broader distribution, additional specialty programs and the addition of experienced underwriting teams.
